Chesterfield have their work cut out against league leaders Scunthorpe

League One: Chesterfield v Scunthorpe

By Cameron Hogwood

Chesterfield take on division leaders Scunthorpe United on Saturday as they look to put an end to a five game winless run in League One.

Scunthorpe enter this weekend’s clash on the back of losing only their second league game of the season in midweek as they were beaten 2-0 away to the 21st-placed Oldham.

Their opponents Chesterfield sit in 22nd place and will be looking to achieve a similar feat to their relegation rivals against the division front-runners.

Manager Graham Alexander is keen for his Scunthorpe team to put aside the disappointment of their mid-week defeat.

He told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: “We always go on to the next challenge. We can’t change Tuesday’s result and you can only influence what is in front of you and that is Saturday against Chesterfield.”

He added: “You don’t chuck everything out because of one bad result. I will keep reminding the players how good they are but we just weren’t ticking the boxes on Tuesday.”

Head coach Danny Wilson will sit in the opposite dugout to Alexander at the weekend as he looks to improve on his side’s record of only one win in their last five league fixtures at the Proact Stadium.

Wilson has no concerns over his side’s motivation ahead of a meeting with the league leaders.

He told the Derbyshire Times: “The lads won’t feel sorry for themselves, I can promise you that, we’ll put in a good performance. It won’t be difficult to raise them.”

Both teams will be desperate to avoid a loss as Scunthorpe look to extend their lead over Bradford City at the top and Chesterfield continue their relegation scrap.
