FC United desperate to move out of the drop zone

By Alex Gibbings

FC United of Manchester host Alfreton Town at Broadmoor Park on Tuesday night, as they look to build on their home win against AFC Telford United at the weekend.

The home side are still in search of a permanent manager, with striker Tom Greaves in a caretaker role, following the departure of Karl Marginson last month.

Marginson was the Red Rebels’ only manager in the club’s history, having been at the helm since their formation in 2005, but a poor start to their National League North campaign this term saw him part company with FC United.

Greaves stepped into the role, and has since clawed the Reds away from the National League North drop zone, winning two of his three league games in charge, as his side now sit just a point away from the bottom three.

The continued rise of the team from Broadmoor Park has been well-documented over recent years, with the club formed by disgruntled Manchester United fans who were unhappy with the Glazer family and their running of the English giants.

The Red Rebels began life with three consecutive promotions, winning two league titles and a play-off final on their way to the Northern League Premier Division.

A long spell in English football’s sixth tier was finally ended in 2015, as the Reds won promotion to the National League North with yet another league title to add to their trophy cabinet.

Tale of the season:

This term has seen them struggle early on, with FC United now at risk of dropping back to the Northern League Premier Division after two seasons.

Tuesday’s fixture with Alfreton Town comes at a good time for the Red Rebels, with the visitors themselves struggling for form as of late, losing four of their last five league fixtures.

Momentum will be key for FC United, and Greaves will be looking for a win that could see him emerge as the top contender for the managerial role at Broadmoor Park on a permanent basis, whilst dragging his side further away from the drop zone at the same time.
