LIVE: Boxing – Lomachenko v Pedraza

Ring Magazine’s current pound-for-pound number one Vasyl ‘Hi-Tech’ Lomachenko (11-1; 9 KOs) takes on Jose ‘Sniper’ Pedraza (25-1; 12 KOs) from Madison Square Garden theatre on Saturday night. The fight will unify Lomachenko’s WBA (Super) title and Pedraza’s WBO belt in the Lightweight (135 lbs.) division.

Three-weight world champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist Lomachenko will be looking to add another world title belt to his already gleaming resume, after coming through his toughest test to date against Jorge Linares last time out, as he defends his lightweight title for the first time.

Across the ring stands Jose Pedraza, like his counter-part he’s moved up in weight from super-featherweight, after his only career loss to Gervonta Davis in January last year. Pedraza, who won the WBO belt against Ray Beltran in his last fight, faces a stout first defence against one of boxing’s true modern greats.

AND NEW UNIFIED WBA AND WBO LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION!

Jimmy Lennon Jr stands centre ring with the decision as we go to the judges scorecards after twelve rounds.

Winner by unanimous decision – 119-107, 117-109, 117-109 – VASYL LOMACHENKO!

05.26

ROUND 12:

Twelfth and final round, it’s been close throughout but that eleventh round from Lomachenko changed everything!

Lomachenko is landing and scoring at will, Pedraza looks out on his feet. He’s got a minute fourty-five seconds to survive!

There’s just nothing coming from Pedraza as he tries to survive, Lomachenko stalking him going upstairs with the left hand. It’s surely his for the taking now!

THE BELL SOUNDS, BOTH FIGHTERS EMBRACE – WHAT A FIGHT!

Scorecards to follow, I have it 117-109 in favour of Lomachenko.

05.23

ROUND ELEVEN:

Slow start to this round, Lomachenko doing the better work however staying behind his jab with a couple of scoring punches.

A GREAT STRAIGHT LEFT, LOMA FIRES AWAY WITH THE JAB, COMBINATION AFTER COMBINATION, UPPERCUT AFTER UPPERCUT AND HIS FIRST KNOCKDOWN OF THE FIGHT!

Pedraza withstood an onslaught for a minute with clean punch after clean punch and SOMEHOW managed to get back up, after an eight count!

LOMACHENKO COMES BACK AGAIN AND ITS ANOTHER KNOCKDOWN, HE’S STUCK AN UNBELIEVABLE BODY SHOT INTO THE GUT OF PEDRAZA!

Somehow Jose manages to get back to his feet after another eight count, the bell sounds once more and this scintillating round comes to an end, a wide one for Lomachenko who blows this fight WIDE open – I have it 10-7.

05.22

ANOTHER KNOCKDOWN!!!

05.22

KNOCKDOWN!!!

05.18

ROUND TEN:

We’re into the championship rounds here at MSG!

Great start to the tenth as Lomachenko gets through with a scoring right jab, beautiful combination again as he lands a left then another right hand. Still Pedraza shakes his head…

For the first time in this fight Pedraza seems to have slowed as Loma keeps coming forward.

Two solid body shots from Pedraza as Lomachenko nods his head in approval, AND ANOTHER!

Pedraza goes upstairs with a left hand and then a straight right, but Lomachenko comes back to land a straight right to finish the round. Great round again and another close one – I have it 10-9 to Loma, just.

05.15

ROUND NINE:

Ninth round, many didn’t see the fight going this far with Pedraza being the 1/50 underdog.

Both fighters showing great stamina as the head movement continues.

Lomachenko lands once more in the corner and rocks the head with a beautiful uppercut, is he finally starting to make his imprint on this fight?

Saying that, Pedraza comes back once more to the body, a minute left in the round he switches back to the orthodox stance.

Lomachenko finds a way through with his best combination of the fight, AND AGAIN WITH THE RIGHT HAND!

Pedraza just shakes his head and says bring it on, Lomachenko takes the round 10-9 scoring with a multitude of left hands.

05.11

ROUND EIGHT:

Lomachenko has found himself in a fight tonight and must up the ante, Pedraza with a solid game plan.

Lomachenko lands twice early in the eighth with two strong straight left jabs, a much better start to this round.

Solid body shots once more from Jose however, this fight really is in full swing now.

Great work again from Lomachenko as he goes down to the body and back up to the head landing a solid right hand.

More exchanges as both fighters catch each others with one-two combinations. Great round from both fighters, however Lomachenko just did enough to edge that for me – 10-9.

05.06

ROUND SEVEN:

I have it all even midway through the fight and as previously mentioned its been a chess match thus far.

Lomachenko has definitely increased his work-rate after a stern word from his trainer in the corner, his upper body movement increasing and catches Pedraza with a good right hand.

Pedraza switches up back to southpaw and lands a couple of switch right jabs and a nice left hook, also works the body of Loma.

Both fighters now stood centre ring exchanging punches as the bell sounds, best round of the fight so far and a 10-9 round for the Ukrainian.

05.02

ROUND SIX:

Lomachenko may well have found his match tonight as Pedraza seems totally at ease sharing the ring with the three-weight world champion.

Pedraza unleashes a wonderful combination and follows up with a beautiful right hand, but Lomachenko comes right back with a right hand of his own. Pedraza once again has been the busier fighter.

Pedraza goes to the body again and lands another combination, definitely another round in the books for the Puerto Rican 10-9.

04.59

ROUND FIVE:

Both fighters begin the round standing centre ring, Lomachenko catches Pedraza with two quick left double jabs.

Pedraza coming right back however, a lovely shot to the body of Lomachenko, but he remains unfazed.

30 seconds to go in round five and Lomachenko lands a beautiful combination flurry, but it doesn’t seem enough to win the round as of yet – Pedraza just takes the round 10-9.

04.55

ROUND FOUR:

This fight looks poised to open up now as both fighters land scoring blows to begin the fourth, Pedraza’s switching up to a southpaw stance to match Lomachenko and it’s giving him problems.

Lomachenko gets through with a right hand, although it doesn’t look enough to take this round as once more Pedraza has been much the busier fighter.

But Lomachenko comes storming back to win the round with 20 seconds to go, scoring two sweet left hands once more as he rocks the Puerto Rican. 10-9 and I have it 3 rounds to 1 in favour of Loma.

04.51

ROUND THREE:

Great round from Pedraza until the final 40 seconds, he’s showing great upper body movement to evade the Ukrainian, however, how long can he keep this intensity up remains to be scene.

There’s also a slight cut to the left eye of Lomachenko.

With 40 seconds left in the round Lomachenko caught Pedraza with two sharp left jabs again, although Pedraza might have just done enough to win the round 10-9.

04.47

ROUND TWO:

Another intriguing round as this chess match plays out, there’s great patience between both fighters as they search for a slight opening.

Although Jose looked the busier fighter, his glancing blows did little to trouble Lomachenko’s defence as he tries to use his height and reach advantage in his favour.

Lomachenko landed one good straight left hand again and probably did enough to score the round 10-9 in his favour.

04.43

ROUND ONE:

An uneventful first round comes to a close, as Pedraza brings the fight to Lomachenko early, taking hold of centre ring.

Lomachenko did enough to take the round 10-9 however, catching Pedraza with a sharp straight left jab before the close of the round.

04.37

HERE WE GO!

It’s time for the main event of the evening, after an impressive light show both fighters have made there way into the ring in front of a sellout crowd at MSG Theater.

Lomachenko is fighting out of the red corner wearing black, green and yellow trunks and Pedraza is fighting out of the blue corner wearing black shorts with gold trim.

Jimmy Lennon Jr has announced both fighters, the referee has given his final instructions and we’re ready to begin with round one for the WBA and WBO titles!

04.14

UP NEXT!

We’re just moments away from the main event of the evening. Here’s a little reminder as to what both fighters did last time out…

Lomachenko defeated Jorge Linares after climbing off the canvas with a beautiful body shot in round 10:

Jose Pedraza defeated Ray Beltran by unanimous decision to win the WBO lightweight belt:

03.58

AND NEW WBO SUPER-BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION!

Emanuel Navarrete defeats Isaac Dogboe by unanimous decision – 116-112, 116-112, 115-113 – to become the new WBO Super-Bantamweight Champion!

03.53

WHAT A FIGHT!

The twelfth and final round ends, Navarrete has surely done enough here to be crowned the new WBO super-bantamweight champion! I had it 116-112 in favour of Navarrete.

Scorecards to follow.

03.29

UPDATE:

Midway through our second fight, Isaac Dogboe is being pushed to the limit by Emanuel Navarrete, who in fairness, has dominated the fight up until now taking the fight directly to him. The Mexican has had it all his own way so far, rocking the Ghanaian with multiple left hands and a flurry of precise scoring combinations, as his face begins to really swell.

Dogboe, who usually fights with such flair, is having to figure out the switching tactics by Navarette and the obvious massive height differential. However, this fight is purely one sided right with Navarrete leading 5 rounds to 1 on my card.

03.13

KNOCKOUT!!!

There’s already been one brutal KO in tonight’s first fight, up-and-coming, 2016 Olympic lightweight Teofimo Lopez blitzed veteran Mason Menard inside of 44 seconds of round one with a devastating right hand, knocking Menard out cold.

03.08

PENULTIMATE FIGHT

Before the main fight we have another quality contest, in the super-bantamweight division between undefeated WBO champion Isaac Dogboe and the well versed challenger Emanuel Navarette.
