Top show tunes will be showcased by young Brownies and Guides tonight and tomorrow at The Leeds Carriageworks.

‘Girlguiding Leeds Rockz the Musicals’ sees the girls, age seven to 18,  performing in front of a sell out audience.

The girls, picked by auditions from guide groups all over Leeds, got to train at the Northern Ballet in preparation for their big performance.

Audrey Morrell, county commissioner for Girlguiding Leeds, said:  “The girls really threw themselves into it. They came from all over Leeds and made lots of new friends that they wouldn’t have met otherwise.

“Some of the girls have knowledge of acting and singing but putting on the show is an experience that some of the girls might not have had otherwise.”

The show is now in its second year after the voluntary organisers were surprised by the success of its first run.

The success looks set to be repeated as the organisers are expecting to play to three full houses including seven o’clock shows each night and a Saturday matinee at two pm.

The show, written, produced and directed by amateur volunteers linked to the Girl Guides, follows a group of girls on their trip through Theatre Land.

Audrey said: “We aim to have audience members dancing in the aisles to a selection of songs from Oliver, Grease, Cats, Mary Poppins and The Lion King.

“Different dance numbers and solos will be part of the show as well as the acting and musical choruses.”
